Genre: RnB

My group and I chose RnB as our genre, as it was the most popular among our group and a genre we in which we all had a passion for. Thus, we decided it would be practical if we did further research into the genre in order to highlight key conventions of an RnB music video and what they don't usually include.

Example:

Music Videos:

At the start of our Media course, we brainstormed our expectations of music videos, and learnt about Music Video Auteurs. As an assignment we had to create a presentation on the Auteur Theory.

Conventions of RnB clothing: Male and Female artists

RnB male artists usually intend to have minimum clothing on, an example of this would be, Trey Songz and Usher. This is mainly due to the fact that their target audience are young girls, and minimal clothing increases their 'sex appeal'. Male RnB artists also tend to have tattoos on their arms or chest or any other place that is easily noticeable. The content of their tattoos also represents the artist persona, for instance their past, childhood, or even goals and aspirations.
Unlike hip-hop artists who tend to wear large noticeable jewelry (i.e chains), RnB artists mainly stick to a more 'minimal' simplistic look, compared to Hip Hop - one way in which the two can be distinguished.

Female RnB artists usually have very little clothing on, for example they constantly have their stomach or legs on show. However they do maintain class and sophistication throughout their image. This is intended to intrigue their target audience, who are commonly male or young females. An example of this would be Alicia Keys and Beyonce. Hair and make-up is also an important thing for female RnB artists; they usually keep it 'simplistic' yet sexy, through using natural tones. Their hair-styles are styled in their own unique way -Alicia Keys' braids are unique to her which starts a trend for her target audience; this is also a clever way of gaining audience recognition and remembrance.
