Construction of our Magazine advert;

My group and I created our first draft of our magazine advert; we came up with this design from our audience research and own independent research in previous RnB magazine adverts, in order to establish the conventions. We then each sketched different drafts of our magazine advert, which our audience then voted which one they liked the best (which is shown in my research and planning). From this we also gained some constructive criticism, for example, plan our colour scheme. We then went away and built and developed on our magazine advert. For instance, we did some more research on common poses of RnB girl groups - sitting down/Ariel shots, and incorporated this into our own advertisement; we also made it more related to our girl group, for example incorporated a clock, signifying our hit single 'It's too late now', and our album name 'Countdown', as well as having a logo for our website link. Below is the first and second draft of our magazine advert:

Second Draft

Our next step of our magazine advert construction, was to actually create what we decided on, with photoshop. I believe I have gained a lot more knowledge, as to how to use Photoshop from my AS coursework last year. We as a group, have all progressed which is why our knowledge and understanding of many soft-wares has increased (e.g. photoshop, imovie, finalcut-pro). However, creating what we sketched on Photoshop turned out to be harder than any of us expected; we established that what we had in mind did not turn out as good in real life.

Nevertheless, we decided this would be an excellent stage to carry out further audience feedback on our product. Below is the 3rd draft of our magazine advert, along with some of our audience feedback. We had some members of our target audience write down their opinions and suggestions of our magazine advert, which we then used to create an online cartoon character, to represent our audience members in a creative way.

Audience Feedback

             on

From this audience feedback, we came to a conclusion that, although our idea looked great on paper, it did not work out as well in reality; it did not look as authentic as we intended. We also found that it did not appeal to our target audience greatly, as they weren't too fond of the plain background. However they did say that we followed the norms and conventions of magazine adverts, by including contemporary technologies such as QR codes and Twitter, authentic language such as Out Now and using a group picture of ourselves as the main focus. They also noted how the name of our group; Brown Eyes, is written in the colour brown and in italics, emphasises the originality of our product.

In turn, we again used our audience feedback constructively, to progress even further. We took all our positive and negative feedback, and used this to re-construct our new magazine advert. We incorporated the main strengths that our target audience commented on in our previous magazine advert, to come up with our new design; for instance, our audience stated the main strengths were our group picture, use of new digital technologies, font & colour and professional language. We therefore decided to keep it authentic, original, conventional and simplistic by enlarging our group photo and getting rid of the framing. We also found that a large photograph of the artist(s) is a convention of RnB magazine adverts, as they are always the main focus. Our target audience found our fourth magazine advert very authentic and appealing, they noted how improvement and progress can definitely be seen. From this and our audience feedback we carried our from our AS coursework, we know that audience feedback is an essential part of our construction, and glad we decided to undergo it, every step of the way, in order to constantly progress and improve.

Construction of our Digipak;

My group and I created our first draft of our digipak; we came up with this design from our audience research and own independent research in previous RnB digipaks, in order to establish the conventions.
We then each sketched different drafts of our digipak, just like our magazine advert, which our audience then voted which one they liked the best (which is shown in my research and planning and the slideshow below). From this we also gained some constructive criticism, on what we should include and exclude, for instance what colours they would prefer to see.  We incorporated a clock, signifying our hit single 'It's too late now', and our album name 'Countdown', it also represents the type of jewelry that is present in most RnB videos. A breakdown of the different parts of our digipak is presented in my research and planning. Below is the first and second draft of our magazine advert:

Re-drafting

From some feedback from our audience we changed our colour scheme, we also changed the colours as we bought our dresses and they were red, so it would be appropriate to re-draft our digipak. We also came across an issue with constructing different parts of our faces on photoshop, as this would have taken weeks. We therefore came up with an alternative, which still included using our faces. We also changed our outfits for our poster to army clothing, to represent our unity and power we have  together, which is why we have such a strong pose. Below is the re-drafted version of our digipak:

We then began to construct our final idea on Photoshop. Below I have presented the different panels of our digipak. We found that our ariel shot we originally planned to do for our poster, did not turn out as well. We therefore decided to use a shot of us 'Saluting' which signifies our strength, power and assertiveness, as do most girl groups such as Destiny's Child and Cherish. We also thought that this pose reflects our outfits really well.

We also realised that we needed to add finishing touches, for example our group's name, Brown Eyes, on the side of our digipak. Our poster is inspired by girl group, Cherish. Our pose and costume signify our independence, strength and power as women. Our Front and back panels present us in a unified way which represents our 'sisterhood' as a girl group. Our red dresses really stand out, which emphasises the whole theme of our song; love. Our group name Brown Eyes, is continuously written in our signature Brown italics which helps our audience to identify our products. I learnt that continuity is key. We also merged a subtle Photo-shopped effect, as if an eye is opening/closing, which represents the opening of a new chapter-new girl group. We stuck to conventions of our genre and did not include a tracklist at the back of our panel, as we found they are mainly located inside the digipak. We challenged conventions of ways of presenting the track list, as our track list is incorporated in a gold watch, which is used to represent the element of time, and is also found in our song 'It's too late now' and album name 'Countdown', this piece of jewelry is also seen to be a convention of the RnB genre. We found that this is  quite an original way of presenting our track list. We have also included 10% off the next album tour which is another convention of the RnB genre. Lastly, our CD consists of parts of our group member's faces; inspired by Destiny's Child. Our 'natural' close ups, show our uniqueness and individuality, yet similarities. Below is our final digipak:

Here is further feedback from our target audience on our final product. We gathered quantitative data through online surveys (Survey Monkey) and questionnaires, and presented our responses in a bar chart below. This allows us to easily analyse our data.

Audience feedback on our final product

As audience feedback is an essential part of construction, my group and I decided to carry out our last audience feedback on our final product, to see their views. I have presented their short responses in a creative online wordle below:
