Research into a similar genre

My group and I decided to carry out research into a similar music genre (RnB). We decided it would be more useful if we researched into similar artists as well as genre - Seeing as we will be performing as a girl group, we each chose a girl group to research. This research will not only help us to outline similarities and conventions girl groups tend to use, but also allow us to challenge some of these conventions to add originality.

Our chosen genre for our music video is RnB. My group and I believe a good way to research this particular genre and finding out the conventions of it, would be to construct audience research as to what they think about the genre, what they're expectations are and the various magazine adverts and digpaks on similar artists/groups from the genre. From this, we can outline common trends and patterns (conventions) within the genre - which will help us to know what we have to conform to, and which conventions we can challenge in order to be original and creative.

Audience Research

From this piece of audience research we undertook, our aim was to highlight key aspects and common trends of the RnB genre, so that we can implement various suggested things within our own music video.

The questions we asked included;
1. What Do You Think RnB Is? / What is RnB to you?
2. When You Hear RnB? What Do You think of and Why?
3. What Do You Notice About RnB Girl Groups? / Common trends spotted?

From our audience's comments, we have established that a lot of people associate RnB with Destiny's Child and the Pussycat Dolls; because of their 'popularity' we as a group have done in-depth case studies on these particular girl groups, as they have helped 'inspire' our music video.
According to our audience research, the RnB is a genre of music which people enjoy listening to and occasionally, music you can dance to. It is also the type of genre you would listen to when you are experiencing a strong emotion, such as heartbreak and pain. We would have to take this helpful feedback into consideration when choosing our song.
Furthermore, what our target audience have noticed about RnB girl groups is that, although each member has various personalities, they merge well as a group and present themselves similarly - such as similar clothing - which connotes sisterhood. Additionally, some RnB girl groups have natural hairstyles which their target audience can relate to/find appealing. Most RnB girl groups also tend to be majority Black or Mixed. We will take these different things into consideration when forming our group and creating our music video
